jyotiṣāṁ api tat jyotiḥ tamashḥ paramucyate

jñānaṁ jñēyam jñānagaṁyaṁ hṛidi sarvasya viṣhṭhitam  – Bhagavdgīta 13.18

That which illumines all luminous bodies, beyond the darkness of tamas’

That indeed is knowledge, the object of knowledge and the goal of knowledge, dwelling in the hearts of all beings.

Brahman, the supreme immutable Source is repeatedly referenced in Vedic and Yogic literature as an incomparable, immutable effulgence. It is This that illumines the solar orb in dazzling splendour. It is This that illumines the serene moonbeams. It is This that blazes as the fiery heart of fire. It is this that flickers as beads of light in the wick of oil lamps. It is This that dwells deep within every one of us, the Viśokā jyotiḥ.

Since time immemorial, our masters venerated objects of light, seeing in them not just the symbolism of removing darkness but also practically the effect of the sun, moon and fire that nurture and cleanse in unique ways. They also perceived and experienced a deep connection between external objects of light and the minute but eternal flame of the soul within. In celebrating that connection, they explained, lay the secret of health, longevity and spiritual growth.

In this fully curated meditative retreat held at the timeless City of Light, Kāśi (Varanasi), participants explore the Yogic symbolism of the sun, the moon, fire and the lamp, with integrated experiences of chanting, ĀsanaPrāṇāyāma and Dhyāna focusing on these themes. Designed to integrate experiences of the sunrise along the Gaṅga, the sunset Ārati to the flowing river and also explore the uniqueness of Kāśī, this retreat will culminate on the night of Kārtika Pūrṇimā with the spectacular vision of Dev Dīpāvalī, when all 84 ghats of Kāśi come alive with the dancing glow of millions of oil lamps.
