Prakrti-Vikrti An International Vedic Chant Intensive

KYM announces for the first time an exclusive Vedic chant intensive, “Prakrti – Vikrti” that aims at taking the student through the intricacies of chanting in the Krama, Jata and Ghana formats.

Among the many types of chants that are in practice, one particular style of rendition stands apart for its intricacy and rhythmic quality. This is the adaptation and presentation of the actual chant in different permutations and combinations. Traditionally, this style of chanting was used to enhance the memory, attention and grammatical knowledge of young students while simultaneously training and sharpening the young mind. Chanting using Krama, Jata and Ghana is a powerful way of reinforcing one’s mastery over a chant, and the back and forth movement across the component words of a sentence, have a unique melodious appeal.

Further, in the modern context, people are seeking new ways to enhance physical and mental wellbeing and people are now increasingly exploring avenues like physical culture and training, listening to discourses, learning and applying modern methods of mental control and skills management etc. In this scenario, the ancient yogic tradition of svadhyaya, the process of self-enquiry using sound and chanting continues to hold its own as a powerful system of improving concentration, memory and processing speed while also soothing the nerves and calming the mind. Also, the inherent role of breath control in chanting contributes to physical and mental wellbeing.

This intensive chanting programme aims at helping the discerning student practically experience this wellbeing, exclusively through the use of Prakrti and Vikrti modes of chanting. Select chants ranging from the simple to the complex will be taught along with their meanings. The course also comprises reflective meditative practices based on the chants taught.

Prior knowledge of Vedic chanting will be helpful, although not essential. Knowledge of Sanskrit is not essential. English transliteration of chants taught will be provided to the participants.
