The oral tradition
of Vedic chanting was proclaimed an intangible heritage
of humanity by UNESCO on November 7, 2003 at Paris, and
inscribed in 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
T Krishnamacharya took a bold initiative in opening the doors of Vedic chanting to everyone irrespective of race, gender, occupation or religious/ political affiliations, with a view to preserving the ancient tradition. His conviction about Vedic chanting as a universal tool for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual empowerment also enabled him to adapt and apply Vedic chanting as a useful tool in the process of yoga therapy. In the context of modern-day society, it is unfortunate that the tradition of Vedic chanting is often misunderstood and misrepresented. If we can look beyond the seemingly religious implications of some portions of the Vedas, a whole new understanding not just of the chants, but of life itself dawns.
Vedavani, the Vedic Chanting unit of Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, was founded in 1999 by Sri. T K V Desikachar with the objective of teaching Vedic chanting with strict adherence to the rules and pedagogy of this ancient tradition.
In this context, KYM hosted an awareness programme on the significance and benefits of Vedic chanting on Tuesday, 26th January 2010 at the KYM premises from 10 am to 1 pm. Well known Harikatha exponent Smt. VishakaHari spoke on this occasion.
Chanting competitions were held for children in 2 categories – senior and junior. The children in the junior category were required to chant from Laghunyasah, ayurmantrah, mantrapuspam or mantrapuspam. The children in the senior category were required to chant Durga Suktam, Purusa Sukta, Sraddha Suktam or Narayana Suktam.
Group chanting sessions of the Suktanms, Taittiriya Upanisat and Yoga Sutra were simultaneously held at three floors of the KYM building.
