| Valedictory Function of the Siksana Krama Program |

Therapy constitutes
the main stay of KYM's work in yoga. However, one major
contribution of Krishnamacharya's tecahing tradition is
the planning of practices based on the stage of life of
an individual. Nevertheless, the siksana krama aspect of
Krishnamacharya's teachings has so far not been prominently
in the lime light, although children's classes at KYM have
followed this approach for over twenty years. In this context,
the KYM-Mitra announced a special program aimed at training
economically underprivileged children in the classical techniques
of doing asanas in mid 2008. Titled, "Siksana Krama," this
program that spanned one and a half years has now come to
its conclusion.
Ten children from Pudiyador, a non-governmental organization
that works with underprivileged children, were given intensive
training in classical asanas. They were taught the classical
vinyasas for over hundred different postures, in the non-compromising
manner in which children were traditionally taught. These
children have been practicing consistently and now report
improvement in stamina and enhancement of overall health.
These children were issued certificates at a valedictory
ceremony held at KYM on Monday, 22nd February 2010. This
project has been a tremendous success and KYM hopes to provide
teaching opportunities to these children in the future.
This is a significant milestone in the ninth year since
KYM-Mitra's inception, and the KYM hopes to do more such
projects that benefit the socially and economically underprivileged
sections of society.
