Ācharya, Sri T Krishnamacharya, was a prolific composer of texts on Yoga. In keeping with his strong textual orientation of Ācharya, Literary Research Division of Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram is happy to announce a two day workshop on Haṭha-yoga-pradīpikā.

Haṭha-yoga-pradīpikā (HYP) by svātmārāma is a 15th century text that delineates the principles of Haṭhayoga practice. This text has served as the cornerstone for the evolution of modern-day yoga practice. It has four chapters that deal with various tools of Yoga, like Āsana, prāṇāyāma, mudrās, Bandhas and karaṇas.  A commentary on this text by Brahmānanda (circa 19th Century) called Jyotsnā brings out the finer aspects of this text. The first chapter of Haṭha-yoga-pradīpikā discusses Āsanas extensively.

Āsana is one of the important limbs of Yoga. Āsanas play a crucial role both in therapeutic and meditative dimensions of Yoga. “āsanena rajo hanti”- Āsana reduces Rajas and thereby promotes Sattva in a practitioner and attunes him towards his meditative goals.

It is proposed to conduct a series of workshops that cover other aspects of Haṭhayoga including prāṇāyāma, mudrās, Bandhas etc in due course. This workshop is intended as the first in this series.

Most training programs in Yoga merely touch upon a few aspects from HYP. This two-day workshop attempts a complete immersion into the textual portion pertaining to Āsanas.

Approach of the Workshop:

  1. Detailed discussion on all Sanskrit verses pertaining to Āsanas from Haṭha-yoga-pradīpikā, with inputs from Jyotsnā.
  2. Special lectures by Senior Yoga experts from the KYM tradition on subtler aspects of Āsanas
  3. One Āsana practice session per day
